Chief of Police – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department

Chief Christopher L. Bailey was appointed to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) in 1999 and has dedicated over 26 years to serving and protecting the residents of Indianapolis. Rising through the ranks, he has held key leadership roles in patrol, investigations, homeland security, and executive command, culminating in his appointment as Chief of Police on January 10, 2024. 

As Chief, Bailey leads the largest law enforcement agency in Indiana, overseeing a $350 million budget and1,500 sworn officers along with 200 non-sworn professional staff. Under his leadership, IMPD remains committed to reducing violent crime, enhancing officer wellness and safety, increasing transparency, accountability, and innovation, while strengthening trust between law enforcement and the community. 

Prior to his appointment as Chief, Bailey served as Assistant Chief of Police (2019–2024), responsible for the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the department. He played a key role in securing funding to hire additional officers, to add law enforcement technology, including license plate readers, public safety cameras, and body-worn and in-car cameras. He also worked with elected officials and community stakeholders to establish civilian-majority oversight boards, and policy changes to enhance transparency and accountability. 

Bailey has also championed officer wellness and safety, recognizing that a healthy and supported workforce is essential to effective policing. He has expanded mental health resources, enhanced peer support programs, and prioritized investments in officer safety equipment and training. His advocacy extends beyond the department, having worked with state legislators to pass laws supporting crime reduction, officer mental health training, and illegal firearm enforcement initiatives. 

Chief Bailey holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Safety Management from Indiana University, Indianapolis and has completed advanced executive training, including the FBI National Academy, the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP), the FBI National Executive Institute (NEI), and the Major Cities Chiefs Association Police Executive Leadership Institute (PELI). 

With a career built on integrity, innovation, and service, Chief Bailey remains dedicated to enhancing public safety, fostering strong police-community relationships, and ensuring the well-being of the men and women of the IMPD who serve the city of Indianapolis.

Bailey is married with three children and is a life-long resident of Indianapolis.
